Italy w/ Parents

Hi, all,
It's been awhile as work and grad school have kept me from traveling much internationally. However, this summer, I am hopefully taking my parents to Italy. They will meet my extended family and I in Rome in mid-July, where we will spend 4 days with them, prior to their departure. After that, we have 6 days before returning to the United States. We have no set itinerary and have only thrown around some ideas. However, while I don't mind moving from hotels/AirBnBs, I suspect my mom would prefer to have 1-2 home bases, rather than traveling every couple of days. Both of my parents are relatively active, so I have little concern about that.

  • We are comfortable with being "done" with the sights of Rome upon the departure of my extended family, giving us 6 full days elsewhere before departing on the 7th day.
  • We are open to departing from either Rome or Florence (but Florence appears to have more affordable flights for our departure).
  • We are interested in seeing Tuscany and visiting wineries in this region.
  • We are interested in seeing Pompeii.

I'd love any insights or suggestions you may have. I realize this is a very loose "itinerary," but it's been a long time since I've visited Italy and I'm struggling to come up with a plan that makes sense and takes into consideration my parents' travel style. Thank you in advance!

I am trying to better understand your itinerary and the coordination with your parents.

Where will your parents be before meeting you in Rome? Where will you and the extended family be before Rome? Who is in the extended family? Do you have 4 days and thus 5 nights for Rome or only 4 nights? Do I understand your parents are staying after Rome and only the extended family is leaving for the U.S? Are you open to having a car to see Tuscany?

I will be with my extended family, who are coming from Prague. My parents are flying into Rome from the US and when my extended family departs for the US, my parents and I will have 6 additional days together during which we would like to visit areas beyond Rome. We are golden on planning our time in Rome, but I need help with the days following, when it would just be myself and my parents.

One thought I had for these 6 days includes:
- Day 1: Rome - Sorrento (arrive around noon)
- Day 2: Pompeii
- Day 3: Sorrento
- Day 4: Sorrento - Florence (arrive early afternoon)
- Day 5: Tuscany day trip
- Day 6: Florence
- Day 7: Depart to US

A different thought would be to spend Days 4-6 in Tuscany and arrive late in Day 6 in either Rome or Florence to depart to the US the following day. I think my father would be comfortable driving. He rented a car and drove us around England and, I believe, has also done so in Germany. I'd have to ask him to be certain.
