Italy Vacation 9/10/18 thru 9/21/18

My wife and I will be traveling to Italy in September 2018 for 12 days, We fly into Rome 9/10 and will rent a car and we would like to spend 5 nights in Tuscany, somewhere centrally located so we can take day trips, one of which to the Hot Springs. we would like to stay at a working farm or winery, can you give us any suggestions?

We will then drive to the Amalfi coast ( or should we drop off the car in Rome and take the train?) and would like to stay close to a beach in an apartment type location. Can you suggest any locations around Vico Equense or close by.

thank you for any input.

Still high season, so you can either adjust your plans to be where the people ain't or deal with the crowds. As you can tell, I don't like fighting the tourists, even if I am in fact one.

I am assuming you are flying in & out of Rome. I would not dissuade you from driving--especially that time of year--but please know what you are getting yourselves into through many informational threads on this forum. Me? I'd take the train to Florence immediately upon arrival at Roma Fiumicino airport, and base there.

For an agriturismo, that would be nice for 3-4 days, but if that's your base instead of Florence, you'll need a driver or a car. Daytrips with or without a car, you can do Fiesole, Lucca, Siena, Pisa, and/or any one of many hilltowns in the area. Then I'd take the train down to the Amalfi Coast, and base in Sorrento or Salerno, again 3-4 days.

We've ridden through Vico Equense and it looks beautiful, maybe the nicest views on that side of the peninsula but it's tiny and may not be quite the best base if you're active and want to get around, although the bus route & Circumvesuviana train do go through there.

Finally, take the train up to Rome and spend your last days there. Your decision as to whether you need to rent a car at any point in this journey.

Enjoy your planning!

Which thermal springs are you looking to visit? Bango San Filippo
Or Casata dei Molina by Saturnia?

After an overnight flight you might be sleep deprived, if you decide to drive toward Tuscany, it might make sense to stop at Orvieto, as it's only an hour forty minutes. It's a beautiful Umbrian hilltop town.

I'd drive to Vico Equense. It will take 4-5 hours without stops, but there's not any train changes and hauling luggage. If you find you don't need or want the car (in September I wouldn't) then drop it in Sorrento.
There are plenty transportation options along this coastline.

As for the Hot Springs we wanted to go to Casata dei Molina by Saturnia, will this be crowded 9/11 thru 9/12?

Unless you go on a weekend, it shouldn't be too busy as the kids will be in school. We were there last October, and it wasn't so busy we couldn't find a parking spot.

Water shoes are recommended, and a bathrobe beats towels.

As a base town to travel around, Montalcino would be pretty central.
Look at Booking.com, then filter for your choice of lodging.

Or Tuscany accommodations.com.
We've use both sites.
