There's frequent inexpensive train service between Sorrento and Pompeii on the Circumvesuviana. The Campania Express train also services that route, but runs only about 4 times per day.

You may have already figured this out but the https://www.sorrentoinsider.com website provides pretty good info about getting around the region. Just click on "Getting to Sorrento" and choose from any number of transport subtopics from the dropdown.

And yes, you'll only have commuter rail (Circumvesuviana) or limited "tourist train" (Campania Express) availability between Sorrento and Naples, and will be using ferries, buses or other forms of road transport around the rest of the A.C.
