Italy Trip notes - Cash, Transit, etc.

Some random thoughts from my just completed Italy trip of 16 days.

Cash--used almost none. Two of 5 lodgings needed cash for their tourist tax, the others were fine adding it to the card. Laundry, a calendar, a couple beverage bottles, a snack. Under 60 Euro total, which came from my diminishing left-overs; trip started in Zurich, never needed to get their CHF.

Leonardo Express. I noted questions on tickets here recently, how and when to get, etc. The entrance machines to the tracks for the LE now have on them card readers, Termini and FCO. No reason to worry about advance ticke or prior wrong time. Just use credit card to tap in and open the gate. Conductor will likely check ticket, at least he did this yesterday on way to FCO, but he reads it from your credit card and sees that it was used, no problems.

EES. I reported earlier of the process as it was in Zurich, they were doing it manually, and quick. Leaving FCO yesterday was no issue, facial recognition i.d.'ed us to our passports and gate opened. Not even stamped out. I will note that there were extensive walks involved at FCO, first way down to US security, then to the border, then to the end of T3, so off train to that area (from which we were then bussed to the outer gates) was pretty much an hour.

Central Rome transit jammed as usual. We "bandited" at least once on a bus as there was absolutely no way to get to a card reader before we got off. Never felt unsafe, although we always had a hand int pair pockets. Coming into Varenna was amusing, we were arriving via the train from Tirano about 6:30, a train that was picking up around 43,000 day-trippers returning to Milan. We actually had to fight our way off the train as the crowd entered in a furious surge with no regard for passengers getting off, pushing them back further away from the doors.

Taking the regional version of the Bernini Express - Zurich->Chur->Samedan->Pontresina->Tirano was spectacular, and easy to set up online once I figured out the locations.

Was surprised by how much smoking and vaping (tobacco) I saw in Rome, particularly among the late teen-early 20's set.

Thank you for the trip notes.

I remember our first visit to Italy in 2022 and I also was struck by the amount of smoking.

Glad to see the update on the Leonardo Express tickets.

We are returning to Europe this fall and I have been debating riding the actual Bernina Express versus taking the regional train. Our route is yours in reverse - Tirano to Chur (or maybe St. Moritz) then on to Zurich and I am not sure it is worth the additional logistical issues associated with reservations and expense to have a reserved seat on a panoramic car, versus hopping on the next available regional train. Since we are spending the night in Tirano, departure time is not a big concern - but an early departure would be preferred due to on-going travel from Zurich.

Salbeachbum-- it is actually really straightforward to get this all on the regional trains on the SBB site, sub.ch. Enter date, from Tirano, to Chur. Check it to show "Full Fare", next to Check Connection click on the three lines to reveal choices, you want "add Via", then enter a via of Filisur (else it will take a different route to Chur). Apply. It will show you all the trains from the earliest you asked, and clicking on any will show you the route and the connection times. Other than in Pontresina they are all directly across the platform. You are not bound to the trains shown once you start, you can take time to the next train at various stations. Sit on LEFT going north. These trains have way less glare than the actual panoramic Bernini Express -you just can't look straight up!), and run the same route (you don't need to go into San Moritz), post less, are less crowded so you can move around. And some explanations are given. You can even book this to Zurich, sit RIGHT on the one going north.

Actually don't know where I should have placed my post - Italy? Switzerland? TransportAtion? Trip Reviews Italy?

Thank you for you instructions - we will likely take the regional train.

Regarding cash, we typically have a few euros. i am OCD enough that we always land with a few euros-usually leftovers from the previous trip, but I have been saying for several years that I can go anywhere that I would want to travel with my phone, passport and a credit card. A few years ago we were in the UK for six days and never obtained British pounds.
