Italy trip in 2026, May and June

I am planning to rent a car when we arrive in Rome and drive to Orvieto. Spend a few nights in Orvieto, and drive to Siena for 5 nights, and then drive to Como for 5 nights. Finally, turning in the car at MXP and spending a couple nights in Milan before flying home.

Has anyone done something similar? If so, do you have any advice? My other option is to take the train, and only rent a car in Siena for touring some of the surrounding hill towns.

Welcome to the forum!
So you aren't spending any time in Rome, right?

Personally, I'd be tempted to do most by train as you won't be using the car IN Siena, Orvieto or, probably, Como (Lake Como or city of Como?) as you'd most likely be using the ferries to get around there. If the car is just sitting parked during most of your city stays, it's sort of a waste of rental fees, and you'd be adding parking fees on top of that.

MXP is some distance from Milan, and you'd be backtracking if dropping off the car, taking the train in to the city, and then out again to the airport a couple days later. If taking a train directly to the city from Como, you could just jump the express train to MXP on departure day and skip the middle leg.
