Italy trip

Hi, we are a group of four wanting to travel to Italy & Greece in August and September this year from Australia.
In Italy, we are interested in travelling to the Amalfi Coast along with Capri, Rome, Venice, Cinque Terre and Florence and surroundings. In Greece we would love to visit Santorini, Crete and Rhodes, along with Athens
The itinerary we are thinking of is by flying first into Venice, then training through Italy ending in Positano on the Amalfi Coast. From Naples we would like to fly (any direct flights?) to Athens. From there we would travel to Santorini, Rhodes and Crete (Hania and the west).

Any suggestions for itineraries, prices or accommodations would be great.

How many nights do you have on the ground?

With 4-5 weeks, I would probably split your time with a few extra days in Italy - I say that mainly because I love Italy and have never been to Greece! Your itinerary could look something like this:

Venice - 3 nights.
Train to Florence - 4 nights; side trip to Siena or other Tuscan town.
Train to Cinque Terre - 2 nights
Train to Rome - 4 nights.
Train to Sorrento - 3 nights. See Pompeii and the AC, Capri
Fly Naples to Athens.

For lodging, consider using HomeAway.com and finding a two bedroom apartment in each location. This will probably be cheaper than two hotel rooms. Be sure to read the reviews. Use skyscanner.net for flights. EasyJet flies direct from Naples to Venice and they are cheap. Be aware that they charge extra for seat assignments and baggage. For trains, you can pre-book the majority of them up to 120 days in advance on trenitalia.com or italotreno.it. If you buy in advance you can save a lot of money on the train tickets. The downside to buying early is that you are usually locked into a specific train so you can't change it if you decide to stay somewhere an extra day or leave early..
