We're taking our first trip to Italy. We're doing 6 days in Tuscany and 3 days in the Amalfi Coast. We were going to drive from Siena to Sorrento until someone told us it would be a 10 hour drive. What's the best way to get there and should we rent a car when we get there or should we take a tour?
Rent the car in Tuscany and leave it there. Take the Train to Sorrento. You will avoid charges for drop off in another location and a car is not needed (probably not wanted) for the Sorrento/Amalfi area.
www.viamichelin.com is a great website that can help you determine driving times and routes. Sieana to Sorrento appears to be a 5.5 hour drive.
Joan, www.viamichelin.com shows this driving journey to be 5.0hrs. Here's the scoop from their site.

Others have said via Michelin is optimistic on travel times. We used the site for planning but didn't really take time to look back at planned vs. actual driving times. It's probably realistic to expect the drive to be longer than 5 hours, plan time to stop for food, see a site, or take the wrong exit once or twice (did I mention get a GPS?).
