Italy - transportation from Siena to Rome

My family and I are traveling to Italy in early May. Our trip will begin in Venice, then take the train to Florence, bus to Siena. My question is should we take a bus or a train to Rome? I understand that we would have to switch trains as it is not a direct route from Siena to Rome. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I always opt for the train. The high-speed train out of Florence is fabulous and worth the diversion. Buy now for possible discounts. When you have a local train (Siena to Florence) combined with a high-speed Freccia, you can buy the entire ticket in advance.

depending on where you hotel is in Siena, you might want to opt for the bus back to Florence - it's a beautiful ride and the bus stop is a bit easier to get to than the train station. Once in Florence the bus station is right across (and less than 1/2 block down the street) from the train station. Like in most of Italy, the connections are quite easy to manage. And yes, if you know when you want to travel and can commit to it there are amazingly low train fares on the trenitalia site!

Why bother taking the bus or train back to Florence when you can take the bus directly to Rome? I've done it, easy peasy! The bus station in Rome is near the tiburtina train station, and you just hop on the metro from there and go pretty much anywhere.

If your Rome hotel is walkable from Termini train station, then train gets you there with one connection; or bus to Tiburtina also gets you there with one metro connection. If your hotel is elsewhere, you're connecting within Rome by metro or taxi. I assume that your hotel is not near Tiburtina.
