We are flying into Roma on March 21st then booked 3 nights there, then headed to Positano for 2 nights on the Almalfi Coast. After that we would like to travel our way up to Venice for 2 nights then work our way back to Roma for our departure on April 4th in the early am. What should we do for transportation to Positano, then get to Venice quickly? We plan on renting a car in Venice to travel back to Roma...
This duplicates the subject of another posting of yours. This one is much more helpful, so I suggest deleting your other one. Happy travels.
Which train? Im getting confused on the trains. We would prefer one without many stops...any suggestions for us?
to get from Positano to Venice, you would have to take the train from either Salerno or Naples to Venice. If you go to the Trenitalia website and enter your departure and arrival cities you will see your options.
Amy, I'm assuming you've already booked your air tickets? Using open-jaw flights would have been much better, especially with a short 13-day time frame. For the trip from Rome to Positano: > EuroStar Italia from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale > Transfer to the Circumvesuviana for the trip to Sorrento. > Transfer to Bus for the trip to Positano For the trip from Positano to Venice: > Bus from Positano to Sorrento > Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to Napoli Centrale > EuroStar Italia from Napoli to Venezia Santa Lucia Using a rental car is perhaps not the best method for the trip back to Rome, especially considering the short time frame. continued.....
Amy - Part 2.... A few "caveats" to keep in mind regarding driving in Italy: It's important to note is that for driving in Italy, each driver must have the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. These are valid for one year, and easily obtained at any CAA/AAA office (two Passport-sized photos required, which in some cases is offered at the issuing office). Failure to produce an IDP if requested can result in fines on the spot! Have a look at This Website for more detailed information on driving in Italy. You may also want to have a look at some of the other posts here concerning the dreaded Zona Traffico Limitato areas that are becoming increasingly prevalent in many Italian towns & cities ( especially Florence!). EACH PASS through one of the automated Cameras will result in a €100+ ticket! A GPS along with a good Map would also be a good idea. Be sure to also give some thought to the question of CDW. If you accept the CDW offered by the rental firm, it will be expensive but will provide "peace of mind". Some "premium" credit cards provide rental vehicle insurance, however I've found this to be somewhat complicated so I just accept that offered by the rental firm. Happy travels!
KEN- What is Open Jaw flights? We have only booked first 3 nights in Rome, then the next 2 nights in Positano. Should we look into the flights for Sorrento/Naples to Venice? THen possibly train or car to Tuscany|Florence?
Amy, Open Jaw is flying into one city and out of another. With your itinerary, it would be more efficient to fly into Rome and then leave from Venice. That way you don't waste vacation time traveling back to Rome for your flight home. Since I'm assuming you already have your flights booked, that's probably not an option for this trip.
Ken - We have the option to change departure city\country will a fee, of course if this would make it easier we would be willing to do that, which I have looked into! Thanks soo much for all of your helpful information. I will be posting on here again im sure of it :)
Amy, If you can change your flight to fly into one city and home from another that would be a cogent strategy. However, this may not be as easy or inexpensive as you might think. I did this several years ago for my ex when a $1000 r/t ticket became a $1600 r/t ticket and we only had to change one leg of the journey. Get the facts and then make your decision. After your first visit you will want to return and the open jaw ticketing could be your first purchase. Buon viaggio,
I managed to change our departure city to Venice with a 75.00 pp fee...not bad and saves me time to spend traveling the Tuscany area!! Thanks for the idea!! It was perfect timing for me!
Amy, It's great to hear that you were able to change your flight arrangements for a minimal fee. Using open jaw flights is a much more efficient arrangement. Not long to go now! Buon Viaggio!
That is great news that you were able to change for only a $75 fee. Flying open jaws, or multi-city, will maximize your time on the ground. Buon viaggio,
