Italy trains in late evening

Taking side trips from Florence means we will often returning late in the evening - often past 22:00. How safe is it on the trains and walking back to hotels? Would it be a better idea to take a taxi at that time?

Using all normal precautions should be very safe. 2200 is still very active street and social life.
