Hi-
My last thread received so much great feedback I thought I'd start another one for a specific area I am hoping someone can give me some advice on.....the trains
I am planning a 10 night Italy trip this October, most likely covering Rome, Cinque Terre, Florence, Venice (in that order since flights have been booked into Rome and out of Venice) Against most suggestions, we decided not to cut any cities out to keep with a busy, fast pasted trip and excited to see how it goes!
I wanted to get suggestions on a few train concerns I have discovered.
Where and when is it best to buy train tickets?
Is there a preferred company or is it just one Italian railway?
****I have been looking at italiarail.com and goEuro.com - are these legit sites to purchase tickets from? or should I go directly to the train's website? I am not even sure if there is one train or if it is similar to an airport with a lot of train companies competing for business
3 . The trains from CT to Florence listed on italiarail.com shows most connections through Pisa are 5-9minutes to change trains...is that reasonable? I am not sure how easy it is to transfer trains- it sound like I would not even be able to get myself off of the first train in 5 mins much less figure out where to go next- perhaps it is like the subway in NY with quicker transfer in some cases?
How long should I get there before a train departs to get through security? Is there a similar screening like in airports?
I have read on regional trains you have to get a ticket validated before you get on the train....what exactly does that mean and where do you do this?
Bonus question:
What is transportation like in Venice from train station and to airport? how much time to plan to get to the S Luca airport?
do you have to book a boat transfer before hand? I don't know where we are staying yet but just wanted to get an idea of what to expect in a city as unique as Venice!
Thanks for any suggestions!
