Italy Train Strikes

I have a ticket on Trenitalia to travel from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale on 20 September 24. I understand there will be a 24 hour strike on that day. How do I know if my train will be affected?

Check the previous threads because strikes are a very dynamic and fluid situation as the proposed strikes get closer.

Part of the deal with the unions that some of the trains are guaranteed to run in event of a strike - the big city to big city trains are on that list. Here is a table of trains that will run - check your train number against the list.

Also often the private train company .Italo is less affected by strikes if you want to look into back-up plans. https://www.italotreno.com/en

Good luck,

Hi, trains strikes are common so it’s good to be prepared. Here is the Italian government’s website for the schedule of strikes: https://scioperi.mit.gov.it/mit2/public/scioperi

(EDITED to remove my referencing the wrong date.)

Even during strikes, certain trains are guaranteed to run. The list of these guarantees trains can be found here.

https://www.trenitalia.com/content/dam/tcom/allegati/trenitalia_2014/informazioni/TABELLA_A_Treni_garantiti_DPLH.pdf

Note that only the city of origin and final terminus are listed for each guaranteed train, so it’s helpful to check the train number.

And here is Trenitalia general info page on strikes : https://www.trenitalia.com/en/purchase/info_contacts/in_case_of_strike.html

The OP is talking about a strike on 20 September 2024, not September 24.

Thanks for catching my error, Lola. For Sept 20 I see a nationwide public transit strike scheduled and a strike affecting trains in Bologna.

Here is info on the Sept 20 public transit strike from thelocal.it

“September 20th

24-hour nationwide public transport strike

The normal operation of bus, tram and commuter train services around Italy may be affected by a 24-hour public transport strike on Friday, September 20th.

The level of disruption caused by the walkout will vary from city to city, with a number of minimum services (servizi minimi) set to run at peak commute times in all affected transport sectors.

The protest is backed by unions CUB, COBAS and USB.”

The "train strike in Bologna" is actually a strike of railway maintenance staff in Bologna.

Thank you for correcting the date and providing the information, “Accidental Southerner”. And I was happy to see your previous note that you found nothing set for 24 September, as we will be traveling in Italy by train or ferry!
