We bought a 3 country Eurail pass (Germany, France, Italy) and planed going from Venice to Naples and back to Milan to leave back home. I tried making train reservation at STA travel at my university and was told that from Venice to Naple the reservation is 105.00 for 2 people and I will have to pay that either in the US or when they get to Italy and that reservations are required.
Does anyone know a cheaper way to do this? It seems unfair that we spend over $400.00 and on top of that there is an add'l amount.
Are you talking about the direct night train from Venice to Naples? If so, then you will need to pay a supplement for sleeping accommodations. The amount varies according to type (couchette or sleeper). And since night trains on popular routes often sell out, it's best to make those reservations well in advance.
However, if you're talking about day trains, then the reservations on any EuroStar Italia trains you take will cost about 15 EUR and for other trains requirng resservations it will be 3-4 EUR. There is no need to make those reservations in advance. You can make them all at the station when you get to Venice.
