Hello,
Does someone have a link to a detail train map of Italy with length of time and cost. I've seen a couple on this site but there are only showing this information for major cities to determine if one needs a Euro pass or not.
Thank you

Thank you
Rome 2 Rio visually maps it out for you, Point A to Point B, their info is most often accurate, but not 100%.
Trenitalia is the actual Italian train website to book tickets.
FYI the Euro pass most times will not pay for itself. Through Trenitalia you can obtain an accurate cost of tickets either bought the day of, or in advance. Judge for yourself.
I would definitely use Trenitalia. I have seen very strange results on Rome2Rio.com and no longer trust it for travel times or fares. Trenitalia is easy to use for planning; I've never bought a ticket from the website. Just remember that Trenitalia requires that you use the Italian form of the city names:
Venezia
Milano
Torino
Genova
Firenze
Roma
Napoli
If you're just moving around in Italy, get point-to-point tickets. A Eurail pass almost never makes financial sense AND you still have to book the tickets AND pay an additional amount each time.
Trenitalia and ItaloTreno are the two main rail companies within Italy. Prices vary greatly depending on how far in advance you buy the tickets.
Try www.trainline.eu to buy tickets - they show both Trenitalia and Italo trains and don't require the Italian names of cities/stations. Should be same cost as the official sites.
Can you buy the tickets on a cell phone and the ticket be downloaded on the phone or will it need to be printed with trentalia?
Sure. You can have the ticket on your phone. Italy is just as advanced digitally as the US. However, I would have a printed copy as back up in case of the phone going missing, battery dies, etc.
Thanks,
Is there an advantage buying the train ticket the day of or day before on the cell phone/trentalia website opposed to buying it at the train station?

Here’s a thread that might help
I'm not the only person on the forum who has reported missing a train while standing in a Trenitalia ticket line, so that's one advantage of not waiting till the last minute to make the purchase. When you aren't traveling solely on regionale (slow trains), there is often a price advantage as well, though that depends on ticket demand for your particular trains.

A-HA! Another disadvantage of the spontaneous traveler! :)
I remember seeing big ol' lines at Firenze SMN station back in 2010 when there on a connection, and wondered about this. Haven't been back there in a couple years--I would imagine they have machines now like Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale do.
Ticket-vending machines are usually a good solution if looking for last-minute tickets, but I was using a senior discount card, and sometimes the machines didn't recognize the card number. That issue aside, I found the machines quite user-friendly. The first step is to choose English, of course.
