Does anyone know of a site that shows all the cities/towns accessible by the Trenitalia (or other) Italian rail networks?
I know how to search for a train on the Trenitalia website but you need to input your destination. I'm planning our next trip to Italy and would like to know which destinations are accessible by train which might color our itinerary somewhat. We've taken the Frecciarossa, Intercity, and Regionale trains on our last trip and were very impressed (as long as they are not on a one-day strike).
Thank you!
This might help: http://goeurope.about.com/cs/italy/l/bl_italy_rail.htm
Also, Trenitalia has a 'smart phone' app. It couldn't hurt to download that and see what sort of help the drop-down menus offer.
This map from Interrail shows all of Europe, with Italy shown in pretty good detail. It still does not include all the suburban lines around Milan or Rome.
You can get that information on the trenitalia.com website, if you use it in Italian. Go to the website, on the upper right side of the page you'll see "treni regionali". Scroll over that and you'll see all the regions of Italy listed. Click on the region you are interested in. Once you are on the regional page, scroll down the page, on the right you'll see a link to "servizi in stazione". That will take you to a page that lists the stations served by Trenitalia in that region. (If you need to, you can use google translate to see that page in English.) Hopefully, that will help you find what you need to know.
You will not get any one map that lists all stations in Italy. There are just too many of them. IMHO the two maps the previous posters listed give less than 10% of the stations.
If you want a list go to the Wikipedia page Railway Stations in Italy, then go to the map at the bottom, and click on the desired Region.
If you know where you want to look, the easiest way is a good map of the area. You could try Google Maps, but my preference is http://www.openstreetmap.org/ which I find is clearer.
Here's my favorite online map for trains in Italy:
http://www.raileurope.com/europe-travel-guide/italy/map.html
It shows you which lines are high speed, and which are the regional and therefore slower ones.
It allows you to see what popular towns are within any specific amount of time from any particular location. For example, type Assisi into the window and then select Assisi from the map to the right. Then click "Where to go next?" and select an amount of time. Sort by time and you can see that Foligno is 14 minutes away, and Perugia is just 20. Or type the name of your known destination in the window below.
Because it's RailEurope, I would NOT buy my tickets on that site, but it's still very helpful.
@ Chris F. Thanks, I had completely forgotten about open street maps. Great resource.
I'm not aware of any rail map that shows all the stops. If you're using Rick's Italy guidebook or Italy planning map, then the colored maps show rail as thin black lines and other regional maps within some chapters also reflect train lines. In addition, each chapter of the book will summarize train frequency and train station location for the towns covered. Other guidebooks should have similar info for the towns they describe.
