Italy Train Covid Requirements

Hello,

We are planning to visit Italy in September, renting a car in the Dolomites and then taking the train for the rest of our trip. I was having a hard time finding information on what is required now as far as covid goes. Do we need a 48 hour negative test to get on the trains or do they seats need booked in advance due to the lesser capacity?

Thank you!

On italotreno's page re Covid is explained what's mandatory and what's optional. There is a similar page on Trenitalia.com

It depends on the route, the day you are travelling and on the time of departure.

The first, non-stop high speed train between Milan and Rome in the early morning is often sold-out on working days and it happened even before Covid. The next train on the same route makes the usual 3 stops along the way and there are always available seats as long as you are willing to pay the full, walk-up fare.

There is typically a huge difference between the walk-up fare on a Freccia train and what you would have paid for the same train shortly after the tickets went on sale. Of course, in these times it's riskier than usual to buy train tickets months in advance.

We were in Italy Jun 12-17. From Milan we took the trains to/from Cinque Terre. No covid tests required and no one asked. We booked ahead by about 2 weeks. Due to Covid, every other seat on the trains were vacant with signs saying seating not allowed. Don't know how long this will continue but you may want to book ahead.
