I am thinking of visiting Greece when Im in Italy. I know Athens is only a two hour flight. But I really wanted to see an island. Any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions. Thanks.

How many days do you have for this part of your trip? What time of year? Did you want to spend any time in Athens? There are so many options that we could help you more if we had more details. For instance, you could fly to Athens and then directly out to your choice of many islands (Santorini is the most popular for a first-timer), and fly back to Athens and then home or back to Italy. You'd probably want at least 3 nights on the island to make this worthwhile. Or you could fly into Athens, stay there for a few days and make day-trips by ferry to one or two nearby islands (Aegina and/or Hydra). Time of year is important, because many islands start to shut down in October and are pretty quiet until April or May. And many of the "big" islands are mobbed in August, so if that is your travel month, you might consider less-touristed options. Once you have narrowed down the details, you might repost a question on the "To The East" board to get more responses.
