Italy to France - Drive or take a train

I am driving from Rome to Lucca where we will need a car but then we are going to France for a week. I am traveling with my husband and two kids. Should we take the car into France and pay the $500.00 drop off fee..or take a train into France and rent another car to have in France? Or just do trains...in France? Help?

Michelle, its more relaxing and less hassel to take the train. Plus wouldn't you rather save the $500 and splurge it on great food? Well, not $500 worth of food, but you get th idea :)

I'm with Michelle - take the train. It's a LONG drive and the train is far more relaxing! I think your two kids would also enjoy it more!

Hi Michelle, I am also going to be travelling with a family of 4, and will be going from Holland to france to italy. We debated over the train vs car and decided to get train passes and rent cars for a day or 2 where needed. I like the idea of the kids being able to wander around when they get fidgety, and being able to go to the bathroom when they need to, without having to hunt for a rest stop. Not having to worry about getting lost in unknown territory with kids also gave me a certain level of comfort. Have a great trip.
