My wife and I are going to Italy for 8 nights in the last week of July. Our goal is to have a leisurely trip by basically staying in only two hotels, four nights in one place (and a couple of day trips maybe from that place) and then four nights in Rome. We love beaches and coastline. Our thought for the first place had been Cinque Terre, with side trips to Pisa and Lucca or other Riviera spots, but we're a little concerned about the crowds. Any suggestions? Should we stick with this plan or consider somewhere else? Thank you in advance!
Suspect at this late date pickings will be slim for CT or any other "Riviera' spot.
Plan on everywhere having crowds
What I found in July 2016 is that a lot of the crowd day trippers from all points will leave around 6pm so after I idid my daytrip to Pisa one time it was pleasant and romantic watching the sunset at Vernazza.
You're going to find crowds almost everywhere in July.
Take a look at Viareggio, it's defiantly a seaside resort, but has good connections to both Pisa and Lucca. Beautiful long sandy beaches in the area.
It's an hour from the CT so a day trip is easily possible.

Another special town an hour away is San Giuliano Terme. If you like olive oil, for this reason only, it's well worth a stop.
This blog sums it up perfectly.

Can’t you find a beach spot a bit closer to Rome?
Santa Marinella, Sabaudia, Sperlonga, Ponza Island?
Even the Amalfi Coast would be closer to Rome than the Cinque Terre.
think norther Italy and the coast (not Vinice). Lots of crowds in July. maybe the spring or the fall would be b better
