italy - straight from delta's mouth

got this email from delta moments ago:
'We are excited to share that - as of June 21 - Italy is now open to all travelers from the United States...Based on the latest update from the Italian government (announced June 18) passengers who are full vaccinated, or who can provide proof of either a negative COVID test or full recovery, can now enter Italy without quarantine. We have eliminated our Covid-Test flight testing requirements, so you can now enter Italy quarantine-free by presenting one of the following health documents:

Certificate of vaccination - please be sure to bring your CDC-issued vaccination card or EU Green Certificate. Keep in mind you must be fully vaccinated, meaning you have had your last vaccination 14 days ahead of departure.
OR
A negative Antigen, PCR, or Molecular test result from a test taken within 48 hours of arrival in Italy. For your convenience, please note that through June 30th we will have testing facilities available in ATL and JFK if you need a test.
OR
Certificate of Recovery from Covid dated no more than 6 months before arrival to Italy.
Please note that Italy still requires filling out the Digital Passenger Locator Form (DPLF) before boarding.'

That’s great news! I’m curious come July 1 will US citizens have to have a green passport per the EU or will the physical vaccine card from the CDC be good enough? I see delta said either one, but Italy only states the green passport

Italy states “ the requirements of green certificate”
One of which is proof of vaccination so have to assume they must accept CDC card since that is all WE in the US have

I doubt Delta would send this out without absolute clarification on their part?

good news isn't it!
i booked a pcr test early tomorrow with my doctor so i am just going to get it anyway. yes, seems like the cdc card will suffice. i will have my state documentation with me as well. what the notification doesn't mention is if the test at the destination airport is still required. no matter, i am prepared to take it. i suppose starting july all one will only need is proof of vaccination or recovery.

Such a relief for we Italophiles and for those who work in the industry there! Hoping our transit through LHR in late August won’t complicate things. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

We're flying on United. In their "travel ready center," where they give requirements for my trip, it says :

"Additional requirements
All arriving passengers must hold either
a negative COVID-19 PCR or Antigen test taken no more than 48 hours prior to arrival; or
hold proof of competing vaccination against COVID-19 at least 14 days before arrival; or
hold proof of a previous positive COVID-19 test and document of recovery issued at least 14 days before departure and at most 6 months before arrival.
Passengers could be subject to testing upon arrival and self-isolation for 10 days with a COVID-19 antigen or molecular test at the end of self-isolation. More details can be found at https://infocovid.viaggiaresicuri.it/index_en.html
Exemptions
Passengers are exempt from pre-departure testing if they are under the age of 6 or if traveling on military orders."

I went to the United website to update some information and I noticed that they have an option that allows you to upload your CDC vaccination certificate. If you do so, they enter you into a drawing to win free travel. Such a deal.

Bud and ChristineH, I'm supposed to leave in less than 2 weeks, on what is currently a Covid test flight out of Newark. Doing this causes me more money and time for travel, which obviously we are willing to do. However, I see a different flight I could take using my miles and it would save me the aforementioned. However, based on your comment, I'm nervous about making changes. TbH, I'm second-guessing the entire trip. It's a meaningful one so I'm watching things closely. Thank you for commenting above.

I uploaded my CDC card to United about 10 days ago after I received their email about the sweepstakes.
I still plan to bring the actual card with me.

Momof3- I don't know what to tell you other than research all the requirements yourself online to confirm what you will need to do with a layover and call the airlines for further confirmation.
As far as I can tell a layover isn't going to prevent you from entering Italy and avoiding quarantine as long as you have the requirements fulfilled.

Has anyone returned to the US from Rome (Fiumicino) recently? I know they offer the Covid Antigen Test for 20 Euros with 1/2 hour turnaround results. Wondering how long the line/wait is to get the test. I realize it depends on time of day, etc., but I'd be interested in knowing how long you waited if you've traveled from there recently back to the US. Thanks!

Yeah, I have been following this on the official Italian site.... https://www.salute.gov.it/portale/nuovocoronavirus/dettaglioContenutiNuovoCoronavirus.jsp?lingua=english&id=5412&area=nuovoCoronavirus&menu=vuoto And they finally updated it after the June 18 declaration.

I guess a couple things to keep in mind:

  • The site only talks about the "Green Pass" and links only take you to sites that explain how Italians and EU residents get it. Nothing really has been said about how a US Resident gets a Green passport, but from everything I have seen, they are accepting the CDC card, or at least Delta is assuming that. My feeling is that, in time...they really may not care.
  • Requirements are still Country by Country, myself, due to a change, I had the chance to change to a flight with a connection in AMS or CDG, I stayed with a direct flight to Italy from ATL. My concern is a flare-up (I am travelling in September) that complicates travel. We are also just sticking to Italy this trip, not planning to hop around 3 or 4 countries.
  • An example is that with the new declaration, From the UK, you still need a test and a short (5 Day) quarantine.
