Italy road tolls

We will be driving from Rome up through Tuscany and Emilia Romagna in October. Does anyone know how much the main road tolls are and do you pay in cash or with a credit card?

If you search your route on viamichelin.com you can see toll amounts for specific routes, distances, travel time and location of speed cameras. This website or app is a very helpful route planner.

I'll let someone else address the how to pay the tolls. We haven't driven in Italy in a few years but I think the last time we paid with cash.

In the same region, I paid with cash and always chose the lane with the sign of a hand holding cash, in order to have a live cashier.

You will almost certainly not be able to use a US credit card in the toll booths so always select a lane with a human or a coin basket. We travel with a little coin purse full of Euro and two Euro coins and 50 cent pieces when we are on the road. The fee is announced on signs before you get to the booth so the co-pilot can have the money ready.

If you have a true "Chip and PIN" card you can pay by credit card.
