Italy Rental Car Lancia or Fiat

My wife and I will be traveling from Rome Termini to the eastern Le Marche (2.5-3 hours away) area of Italy. For our car rental which size would be sufficient for her and I with two checked suitcases and two carry on bags and maybe a backpack?
1. Lancia Y or 2. Fiat 500x. I've read you need a smaller car due to the narrow streets, I am not sure if there is a big size difference between these two categories.

The Lancia is considered an Economy Size car and the Fiat is considered a Midsize car...

Do you plan to leave the car while you have luggage in it?

If so, you want one that can have ALL your bags concealed from view.

Are the "checked bags" the 24inch size or 29 inches?.

Joe32F, we plan to only have luggage in the car while we are traveling from Rome. We are staying at a Palazzo in Petritoli and the luggage will be taken inside once we get there.

The checked bags overall dimensions are 31 x 20.75 x 13.

That's a somewhat long drive (about 4 hours) and you'll probably want to stop once along the way. You might have trouble getting 2 fairly large checked bags into the trunk of the Lancia, so I'd go with the Fiat 500x. It's not a huge car, and besides I really like the 500 series Fiats. I'm sure Joe will weigh in with his thoughts too.

Hi,
You only book a category of car, not a specific model: the models you see are examples.
Economy size is too small for 2 checked suitcases and 2 carry on: you would need to keep some luggage on the rear seats, which is dangerous in case of accident. Even mid-size can be tight, depending on the size of the checked suitcases. Do you really need two of those? Unless you are going on a cruise or need special gear, it seems excessive.

I think with two very large suitcases like that you will have trouble in anything less than a full sized car.

I would choose the 500x simply for the power under the hood. The Lancia has a small cargo area and you will need to fold the back seats to fit your luggage. Actually you might even have a hard time to fit it in the 500X. Do you need all that stuff? They have stores and laundry facilities in the Marche too.

Yes.....we're taking two checked bags and two back packs - which will be the carry on, not a third backpack, I believe I stated that wrong above.

I appreciate all your help, feedback and input; we're staying with the midsize. It's only two of us in the car, so the backseat will work perfectly for the back packs nestled nicely on the floor between the front seats and back seats to prevent any surprises.

The size of the car is not really an issue in the Marche. A few towns may have small streets in the historic center, but most of those areas will be off-limits to non-residents. Definitely not an economy car, and you'll also appreciate a larger car on the autostrada.

What you reserve may not be what you get, so make your decision on size and not make/model. You’ll get what they have on the lot when you pick up your rental. All rental car companies have “or similar” someplace on the page.
