Want to pick up a rental car in Aosta Italy and drop off at a train station just outside of Rome and take train into Rome so to avoid driving a car in the city of Rome. Any suggestions as to drop off location and a good rental car company with pickup location in Aosta and drop off at train staion outside Rome Thanks

I just booked a car through them for our trip to Italy in February and they have been very helpful. 24/7 customer service by phone.

I think your only choice in Aosta might be Europcar. They have an office at the Aosta airport. Otherwise you might have to go to Turin.
In Rome drop near the Tiburtina station. Europcar has an office there and it's easy to reach, just near the freeway A24 end.
Try to rent through Autoeurope.com (a consolidator). They might get you a better rate rather than directly with Europcar.

We dropped our car near the Borghese in Rome and it wasn't too bad with traffic at that point -- no worse than any major US city with crazy traffic. It just happened to be cheaper for us at that location, so we took the chance and it worked out fine.

Do you need a permit to drive a rental car in Italy? I know AAA offers a permit but not sure if you need one? Any advice is helpful. I will be renting a car in May in Milano.

Yes you need an International permit to drive in Italy. They don't always require you to show one at the rental office, but it will be required by the police if you are stopped by the police.
