You have selected locations that are either served by slow local trains or in the case of Positano, no train at all. For Vernazza to Siena, you are looking at just over 4.0hrs and 3 train changes. You will not be going through any major high-speed hubs. CLICK HERE to see the train schedule.

From Siena to Positano, you will need to take a train or bus from Siena to Rome, a train from Rome to Naples, a private Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento and a SITA bus to Positano. You're most likely looking at about 7.5hrs travel time.

A nice place to stay in Vernazza is the Gianni Franzi hotel: http://www.giannifranzi.it

There are several steps leading up to it from the street level, but the views and location are really stunning. Prices are around 80 euro per double room in high season.

The best thing to do in Vernazza is just show up and ask around. My wife and I were there in April and walked off the train, saw a hanging 'rooms available' sign in front of a little shop, walked in and got a nice double for 60 euro a night.
Next time, we'll probably get a room up at the top of town from Il Pirata, since we spent a lot of our time there talking with the brothers and enjoying the awesome food.

Asking around is the way to go, as there are plenty of rooms available.

Have fun!
