Is there a way to get from Orvieto to Civita di Bagnoregio on a Sunday in October. I sense the normal (weekday) buses do not run, and would like to avoid spending a ton on a taxi.

Depending on your situation(number of people, time in area, ECT) a rental car might work. There is a rental agency directly across from the train station, and beside the funicular station. We returned ouor car there and it was very handy. I would do whatever it took to make my way to Civita, it was a spectacular place! I will return if at all possible. I might add that we stayed at Romatica pucci far one night in Banereggio, and were delighted. Pucci is a gem of a person, and the conversation with her was worth the nights lodging. Whatever you decide, I hope you make it. You will not be disappointed! Enjoy!
