Italy Private Guides

Does anyone have feedback on Carmello Monetti, a private guide, recommended in Rick's 2007 Italy book? He offers transportation/tour services for the Amalfi coast and surrounding areas? Do you know of any other guides? Thanks.

Hi, Nancy,

The Monettis are famous for their quality service, even other cab drivers in Sorrento know them.

That being said, here is my post from last September regarding another driver:
We were lucky to get into Antonio Prudente's taxi on arrival at the Sorrento train station a couple of weeks ago. He offered to drive us down the Amalfi coast the next day for 150 euros for the two of us. He picked us up at our hotel after the bus rush hour, and gave us a terrific 4-hour tour down to Amalfi, where we caught the ferry back to Sorrento. Once we got out of Sorrento there was very little traffic.

Antonio was born and raised in Praiano, lived in the U.S. for several years, speaks English, and tells great stories along the way. He stopped for plenty of photo opp's, the emerald grotto, an hour of shopping in Positano, gave us a little tour of Praiano and showed us where to catch the ferry in Amalfi. It was a bit rainy the day we went, and he was very gracious with his umbrella, even offering to leave it with us for the rest of the day.

We felt it was well worth the price to take a customized tour and to get to hear all about the area from a smart and funny local guy.

We cannot recommend him highly enough. He can be reached on his cell at 334 1590159 or at jps@blublu.it.

Nancy:in May, I needed early transport from Sorrento to Amalfi to attend Mamma Agata's Cooking School. Through Chiara (Mamma's daughter) I met Roberto DiPalma. www.amalficoastdestination.com. E-mail: info@amalficoastdestination.com. Roberto drove me to Amalfi 75e. Meanwhile deciding against taking the C-vesuviana train to Sorrento, I contacted Roberto. He arranged for a colleague to pick me up in Naples, 70e. Later, when weather cut back ferry service Amalfi to Sorrento & Naples, Roberto drove me to Naples Port, 75e. It was May, tourism was down, so I can't promise these prices. But Roberto is fair and reasonable, a gentleman, very professional, reliable, personable, knowledgeable, speaks perfect English, but we chatted non-stop in both languages just for fun. Easy to reach, where his fiance Ines is very helpful. Roberto is not just my car service; we are now good friends. Contact him and mention Peggy from Arizona. You won't be sorry.
