Italy plans - Sept 20-Oct 10

We will be attending the Terra Madre Salone del Gusto in September. Following this, we plan on touring in N Italy. Between Firenza, the Hill Towns, Milan, Trieste, and the other places, I am certain we can find plenty of things to do.

Our plans tentatively involve Padua (botanical garden, university, St Anthony), Siena, Firenze, Verona, Genoa, Milano. We may not get to all of these, but Firenza and Milan are pretty much certain. Perhaps a hill town or so as well. Genoa is probably lowest on the list.

We enjoy museums, wine, modest hikes, just strolling around.

Any thoughts or "must not miss" things in that list?

Yes, we will probably fly into and out of Milan for our trip, as a circle route should be do-able. Mostly we will do public transport, although we may hire a car to get to a hill town if that is necessary. We are not enthused about car rentals in Italy or Europe period.

Seconding the rec for the Scrovegni chapel in Padua. Giotto's frescoes are not to be missed!

I'd also recommend Ravenna since you'll be in that general area. Absolutely charming small city with multiple churches full of breathtaking 5th & 6th Century mosaics.
