Italy no more....

Thank you all for your advice on Italy. We had to cancel the entire Italy and Switzerland trip due to my husband having an injury on his finger. He was hospitalized and the Doctor at the ER said "you better start cancelling" on Sunday, when we were set to fly to Rome on Tuesday. I was so devastated. After all that planning, I had to spend just as much time gathering cancellations and policies for every move we made (or were supposed to make) on that trip for our Travel Insurance. I am going to try and schedule it again for April or May....it just has to be on the should season.

So very sorry you had to cancel! Hope hubby’s finger is better soon. At least you’ve got all your research done!

Good for you for having trip insurance.

I spent 2 months planning and changing things around for a great trip on a budget. Yes, at least I have done my research, and I can plan it even better now. I learned more about what days are good for particular sightseeing in every city we want to visit, and I can make better choices for hotels since I will have more time in advance. I just need to decide what time to go....late April to May perhaps. Someone said June, but I think that would be in the busier Summer time.

I replied on the Switzerland forum as well.

Unfortunate but his health is far more important that a vacation.

You had Travel insurance! Brilliant!

Now that you did all the planning for a cancelled trip it will be easy to plan for Spring so in reality your time was not wasted.

We have had to cancel three trips due to health problems, had trip insurance,
and have taken all three of those planned trips since. All the work is done, next time you book , it will be so easy! Hope your husband heals quickly!

We had to cancel our anniversary trip to Amalfi back in May due to my atrial fibrillation two days before we were going to leave. The hotel cancellation fee (50% within one week) was over $2,000. I went to the ER and got cardioverted (the paddles) and have been in sinus rhythm ever since. We rebooked everything and the hotel gave us full credit for the cancellation, the round trip airline tickets went down $596 and it rained 8 of the 10 days we would have been there and never went over 64º the whole time. So we're counting our blessings because sometimes things just work out for the better. Hang in there! We leave tomorrow!

Try to avoid Easter Sunday and Monday, due to crowds and smaller venues closed [e.g. wineries.]
Sympathies and safe travels!

Make sure you get a signed statement from the ER doctor stating that your husband is medically unfit to travel, and explaining why. The insurance company's claims team may not take an injured finger as serious enough to totally cancelma trip.

I have 3 surgeons who were given forms to fill out. Scott cut his finger deep which got real swollen down to his hand, even after taking antibiotics since it was infected. One was a plastic surgeon who had to stitch up a cut tendon and gave me orders on how to care for it at home until seeing him a week later. All of them said he could not travel, and that if he just went without going to the ER, he could have lost his dominant (pointer finger).

OK! You should be fine, once you get those forms back. I wish your husband a complete recovery of function in that finger.

So sorry for the serious finger event. We have taken several trips in March and April. It can be chilly, but wonderful to not have the crowds.
