Italy Napoli Centrale

greetings..My husband and I will be traveling from Rome to Positano in early October. I need to make rail reservations from Rome. Should I book in advance? When I arrive in Napoli my wish list is to see the Museum of Archaeological than a quick view 1 1/2 of Pompeii before We head to Positano. A private cab is costly. So I need to figure out other alternatives. Trying to avoid STRESS full crowded buses. Any suggestions. Should I just hire local cab to take to museum? Or go straight to Positano and do a day trip via boat to Naples & (land) Pompeii. Our visit is only 3 nites before we head to Florence on the rail.

That is a lot of pack in during a trip from Rome with luggage. I would do it as a day trip so there is no pressure to met a time line and, of course, dealing with your luggage. We easily spent a half day in the museum and over a half day at Pompeii. You would have to store luggage at the train station, return pick up luggage, and store again at Pompeii. Seems to be that is where your stress will come from. You might catch one or the other but not both.

The only reason to book in advance is to take advantage of any discounts that might be available but that will lock you into a specific schedule to Napoli. To Pompeii is a commuter line so no advance ticket sales.

what is a "quick view 1 1/2 of Pompeii"? I think you were typing too quickly and left out a word (or two!).

Do you mean you wish to arrive in Naples, visit the Museum and visit Pompeii all in one day, ending in Positano that evening?? that's going to be a lot!

Who are you waiting for a call back from?

If it is the Rick Steves Rail Desk, that's not us. We are a loosely integrated unaffiliated group of fellow travelers who pitch in to help answer questions from people who have traveled less than us.

Buying at train ticket online is relatively simple, but you should read all the info on the web page, and also click any links that provide more info. Tickets are sold in US dollars at http://ricksteves.raileurope.com/us/rail/point_to_point/triprequest.htm, but first you might try going direct to the Italian source at www.trenitalia.com. Advance rates are cheaper but not refundable or changeable, so don't book until you're sure of your plan. They are for sale now for your travel date.
