How is the weather this time of year? If we use Rome as a base are trains fast and frequent enough to get us to Bologna and to the south to explore?
"If we use Rome as a base are trains fast and frequent enough to get us to Bologna and to the south to explore?" Do you mean for day trips from Rome?
"How is the weather this time of year?" Weather questions are frequently asked but are difficult for us to answer accurately. The site FAQ suggests you go here: http://www.wunderground.com/tripplanner/index.asp, input your dates of travel (up to a 2 week time span) and locations you're interested in researching (one at a time), it'll give you the last 10 or 15 years of actual weather for that location and time span.
Yes, day trips from Rome
My last trip to Italy was the last 2 weeks of November, 2008. Weather was mostly good by our standards. Out of a two week trip, we had 3 or 4 days of rain scattered throughout, but never enough to put a dent in our touring. Temperatures in Rome were in the high 50s/low 60s. Of course, YMMV. You could do Bologna as a day trip from Rome but it'd be expensive. The fast train is 2 hours, one way, and costs 58 euro.
Jerry: Use this website...http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en...to determine the station to station times for various train routes from Rome, to decide whether a destination is or is not feasible as a day trip from Rome. The times given are of course only from the time the train departs until it arrives at the stations. You will add to this your estimate of the time it will take to get to the Rome station, wait for the train, then the station to station time, then the time to get from the destination station to various sites, the time to see and do things, including eating, the time to get back to the station, wait for the train, then the station to station time back to Rome, then the time to get from the Rome station back to your hotel, clean up and fall into bed. The website is the German Bahn website and is suggested because it's the most user friendly Europe train schedule website, it gives times for routes in Italy, you put in the city but not the country, in most cases it will accept the English spelling "Florence" versus the Italian spelling "Firenze".
