I'm 72 and in good health and after three trips with family I'm traveling solo to Europe for the first time, into Milan for two nights, then Venice for three nights, Florence for three nights and Rome for five nights. I had originally planed to do the RS 10 day tour of V/F/R tour but in the end decided to do it on my own. Milan is for the Last Supper and their cathedral, Venice for wandering and I've never been to either. After all the plans were in place except for train tickets and reservations for a couple of sites in Rome I started reading here about not spending all my time in big cities and taking side trips out of them. In Florence I want to do the Academia, Uffizi, San Marco, the Bapistery and the Doumo Museum. Climbed the dome last time and not doing it again, but thinking about the bell tower. I did a bus tour to San Gimignano and Siena in 2007 with family so they're out. I have 2 1/2 days in Florence (or three if I leave for Rome later in the day) and I'm wondering if it is worth it to take a day trip to Pisa or somewhere else nearby? Also would appreciate any ideas on a day trip out of Rome. Lastly, am I better to purchase advance tickets for my three trips from M-V, V-F and F-R, or buy them on the fly? Thanks.
