I'm going on a trip to Italy from May 14th to 31st. are there any festivals for special events that I should be aware of? I have already been to Italy twice and I am very open to just going anywhere within the country. any suggestions or opinions would be very welcomed. Thanks. Bill
On this website, check out Explore Europe/Italy/Holidays and Festivals... The Festival of the Cricket, May 17th, in Florence looks intriguing.
Venice Vogalonga is on May 24th. It is a festive parade of boats http://venicexplorer.net/tradizione/vogalonga/index.php
We are actually going to be there at the same time. I found at the end of January some difficult time getting hotels in the smaller cities. But used Bookings.com, you may not find the same issue at this point but I would get on with some reservations now. We booked all our tickets for main sites that we absolutely want to see, this will be our fourth time and I think a lot of people are traveling to Italy this year because I can tell by the prices that they are expecting large crowds. It is just a different vibe than years past.
The Giro d'Italia is in May, from the 9th-31st, here's a good overview.... http://www.steephill.tv/giro-d-italia/
I love the Giro, and will be in country from 10-24, and they are going in the opposite direction of me!
But so cool about the cricket festival!
Ther is also the Mille Miglia which is all ceremony now, no longer a race, but if you happen to be in a place where they are driving through it is fun to see the old cars.
The World Expo is in Milan starting May 1.
Have fun!

Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio on May 15. The festival dates back to the 1100's. I went a few years ago and really enjoyed the experience. You can find details and pictures at www.ceri.it (icon in upper right for English version).
