Italy Itinerary suggestions

Hello!
My husband and I are headed to western Europe for the first time - his first time out of the country! I'm hoping to get your thoughts and suggestions on our itinerary. We know we can't see everything but just so hard to decide! Additionally, if after you have make itinerary suggestions, I'm curious your thoughts on a 3-Country Euro-rail pass or go with one way tickets. Lastly, any thoughts on places to stay on the lower budget range would be great! We are using Rick's Italy 2017 book for hotel stays in Italy, but don't have the Germany/Austria book yet.

Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive in Nice at 11am (was planning to visit family but now he won't be there! Still have his place to stay)
Day 2: Nice
Day 3: Travel to Rome in the morning (plan to fly)
Day 4: Rome
Day 5: Rome
Day 6: Rome
Day 7: Travel to Florence in the morning (train)
Day 8: Florence
Day 9: Travel to Venice in the morning (train)
Day 10: Venice
Day 11: Travel to Bolzano/Dolomites in the morning (train)
Day 12: Bolzano
Day 13: Bolzano to Salzburg (train)
Day 14: Salzburg to Munich to Fussen (trains and bus to Fussen) - we know this will be a travel day, but we're ok with that
Day 15: Fussen
Day 16: Fussen
Day 17: Fussen to Munich (bus)
Day 18: Munich
Day 19: Munich
Day 20: Travel home
How does that sound? Packing in too much? Do you think this is do-able? We're having some trouble in norther Italy, western Austria, and southern Germany. Ideally we'd like to spend time in Innsbruck and Hallstatt Austria but we don't think we have time. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you!

You have a lot of two night stands that really means you only have a day in that location. Most here prefer at least three nights. You are doing a lot of times wasters -- packing, unpacking, checkin and out, finding trains, travel, etc. I would doubt if a three country pass would save any money and remember with a rail pass you have to pay for a seat reservation. With advance purchase discount tickets it is very hard to make a pass pay. But the only way to know for sure is to price it and compare. Your time time in Florence and Venice is very short. You can do it but you need to recognize what you are trading off for a quick, fly by trip. A best, you will only get a brief taste of each city but for some that is enough.

I know this is the Italy forum, but since you asked about places to stay in Germany, I'll mention that we stayed at Hotel Laimer Hof a couple years ago and really liked it. It is pretty reasonable (not sure your actual budget) and included breakfast. Our room and bathroom were small, and it wasn't in the center, but rather more in a neighborhood, which we liked. The tram/bus stop you needed to walk a little so we took a taxi from the train station when we arrived. There are 2 authentic beer gardens within a 10 minute walk - our friends who used to live in Munich met us that week-end and they said these are the places they went when they lived there - Hirschgarten and Kurgarten. Take 2 days from Fuessen and add one to Munich and one to Florence.

I really, really think you need one more night in Venice. With just a day and a half there's a risk of spending most of your time surrounded by crowds of other tourists at the top sights. You need an extra day to get into the back streets and canals, else you will be yet another person who didn't much care for Venice because of the crowds..

I like Bolzano. It's very pretty, and it has some interesting museums, including the one housing the Iceman. But if you want to see the Dolomites, most here will urge you to stay up in the mountains in a place like Ortisei instead. There's relatively frequent bus service from Bolzano (near the train station) up to Ortisei as well as some other mountain villages. Alternatively, you certainly can stay in Bolzano, but plan to hop on a bus ASAP after you've dropped off your luggage, assuming the weather's OK for some mountain walking. In this case I'd try for a Bolzano hotel that's pretty near the train station/bus stop.

Frank made some very good points and you would do well to read his post again. Most folks want good memories of places, people, good food & wine, and such. Not just memories of train stations and riding the rails. This may be a case in which less is better. But to each his own. If a once over lightly is ok then, yes it is doable. No idea about your age, but I'm afraid it would wear me out.

Not enough time in Rome, Florence and Venice.

Four days is not bad for Rome but could use at least one more day.

Also, better two days, not counting travel time for Florence and Venice.

Austria and Munich are great, but perhaps you should decide between Italy and Germany/Austria.

Another choice is to keep Italy and Germany/Austria and cut the number to places you are staying a little.

Fussen, with Garmisch and the castles is great, but you can see it on a day trip from Munich, of course you would miss going up the Zugspitze.
