Italy - Itinerary Help

Hello! I am currently planning my first trip to Italy and need some help. I don't have an exact date but it will be sometime in February 2019. I know this is the down time but with my work schedule is the only realistic time I can make it work.

Below is my itinerary so far:

Fly: Hamburg, Germany --> Milan, Italy

Milan (1 Night)
- Explore Milan
- Attend game at San Siro

Train: Milan --> Florence

Florence (3 Nights)
- Explore Florence
- Day trip to Pisa

Train: Florence --> Rome

Rome (3 Nights)
- Explore Rome

Train: Rome --> Pompei

Pompei (Day)
- Explore

Bus: Pompei --> Positano

Positano (2 Nights)
- Explore Amalfi Coast

Bus/Subway: Positano --> Naples

Naples (1 Night)
- Explore

Fly: Naples, Italy --> Hamburg, Germany

This being my first trip to Italy I'm trying to find a balance of seeing as much as possible but also don't want to be rushed the whole trip. I am open to any suggestions or advice. I have plenty of time to plan and am willing to take away destinations or add more days to others.

Some questions I need the most help with is what the best route would be after leaving Rome. I would like to travel from Rome to Positano with a stop in Pompei but I am unsure if that is too much for a day. Also, my heart is set on staying in Positano but research has told me Sorrento may be a better base and more easily accessible.

Looking advice on transportation methods and also some advice on places to stay. (Hotel, AirBnb, etc.)

My trip is a little flexible at 10 nights now could be stretched to 11 or 12 if necessary.

That's all I have so far so I am open to any suggestions, tips or advice! Feeling a bit overwhelmed but hope everyone here can help me out. Thank you in advance!

I think a major question on this itinerary is what the Amalfi Coast is like in February. See if you can search some other posts here, as I seem to recall other posters having experience with this. This is an area pretty geared towards tourism and out of season it may be super dead, with fewer buses, etc. That factor makes Positano feel like a real stretch. Your two nights are really just one full day there anyway. I would just add another night on Naples, use that day to see Pompeii/Herculaneum. Put that other night anywhere you like. You’re doing a lot of moving around on this trip, contracting your itinerary a little would be good.

You can’t do it all on one trip. I’d save Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast for another trip with better weather and more time to enjoy it.

The AC is pretty much shut down in the winter. You could use that time to explore Naples since you're flying out of there. Two full days in both Florence and Rome really won't give you much time to see or do anything and with the shorter days you'll be hard pressed to get in a lot of site seeing.

Thank you for your responses! Both seem to believe cutting out Positano is a good choice and after reading your responses and doing some research I think I'll use those days else where to save my self some traveling and give me more time to enjoy other destinations. I believe this will make the trip less stressful and easier to plan. Thank you both!

With 10 days and your entry and exit cities, I would restrict my time to Milan, Florence, Rome, Naples. Amalfi will likely be slow in February. Actually, if you cut Amalfi and can travel back to Germany from a different city, I would cut Naples and maybe add Venice.

Most of the hotels are closed in February in the Amalfi Coast towns and there are no ferries services. Spend your time in either Sorrento or Salerno. Having spent time in both, I would probably recommend Salerno because your trip is short and there is high-speed train service from Rome and to Naples, and Salerno is cheaper than Sorrento. The most scenic part of the AC is between Salerno and Positano. The bus route from Positano to Sorrento is mainly inland. You can take the train from Salerno to Pompeii.
