Marianne,

If your daughter has not visited Italy in the past, and she only has 10 days,

she may want to visit the big 3; Venice (3Nights), Florence (3N) & Rome (3-4N)

She could fly to Venice & fly back from Rome.

While in Florence she may want to take a day trip to Lucca & Pisa or go to Siena.
When in Rome, she may want to take day trip to Orvieto or Ostia Antica.

It's very easy to travel in Italy by train, so she won't need to rent a car.

Edit: Sicily is way out of the way and she can save it for another trip.

Well they could fly to Dubrovnic, work their way up to Split, take a ferry to Ancona (Sun, Tue, Thur), then train to Perugia and Tuscany then Florence and fly back to Copenhagan. I don't see Sicily in the mix in just 10 days.

Thanks, some good advise. If she nixed Croatia all together, could sicily ( palermo) be an option with Florence and Tuscnay included. Not sure where to fly into from copenhagn and fly out of italy. They are not interested in Rome.

I think that would be Copenhagan to Palermo, then maybe Cantania to Pisa or Florence. Fly back from Pisa or Florence or Bologna.

I'd give Pisa a pass, maybe just a half-day trip to see the tower. Florence is the transport hub for northern Tuscany. There are buses to many hill towns for day trips from there. Lucca is worth a day, and so is Siena. I guess if you don't want to have Rome in the mix, might as well go straight to where you want to go. 10 days is not a lot of time. Just Florence is worth 3 days, throw in a few side trips and its time to go home.

I don't understand why your daughter isn't planning her own trip. When I studied abroad, I planned all mine and that was pre-interwebs.

She should watch some videos by RS, look at the Lonely Planet guidebooks (or the RS ones if she wants to concentrate on major cities with turn-by-turn directions. No RS guidebook on Sicily yet.

She should look at Rome2Rio.com to check distances and modes of transportation. The trip you outlined in your original post is not feasible in 10 days, in my opinion, unless she is doing a study on train stations and airports.
