Italy Itinerary

I will be spending 10 nights in Italy in early May, flying into Rome and out of Milan. I will not have a car and may be travelling solo. I am interested in finding maybe 3 good base cities along the way while spending the last night in Milan.

This will be my fourth trip to Italy and have spent multiple days in Florence, Venice, Milan and Rome all while taking day trips to Siena, Lucca, Pisa, Verona, Orvieto.

Would like to hit some hilltowns on my way up to Milan and am probably going to spend 2 or 3 nights in Siena as one base city and am looking for suggestions for other hill towns that may be good for a base city for a 2 or 3 night stays. I'm looking for great food and wine, not very difficult, i know, but maybe too many to choose from. Thanks for the help.

3 previous trips and you haven' been to CT? I think the cinque terre should be a stop on this itinerary. The food is amazing. I've never had better pesto in my life and I learned to love anchovies. I would go back there just to eat the anchovies. I just made myself hungry.

CT is definitely on my list, but i guess the only thing that is giving me second thoughts is that i'm not one to sit on a beach all day (or for very long for that matter) and since there's not a lot to see i'm not sure how i'd spend my time. But i would be i into the hiking and sitting at a cafe for the food, wine and people watching so as i said its on my list. Thanks for the response.
