Italy Itenary Feedback

Taking a 2 week trip to Italy/Mykonos in late June with my SO. First time traveling to Europe but I think I have done enough research to get together a solid plan. But still looking for any feedback from you well regarded insiders!

I've gotten plenty of sight seeing and food recommendation, but always love hearing about peoples favorite spots and things to do. If you have anything you felt was missed just let me know. Would definitely love feedback!

Milan

Flying into Milan where we will stay 1 night. Landing around 1600. Plan to take the train into Milan to drop bags at hotel and do some exploring, dinner, etc. Next day we are going to try and do the quick tour of Milan, hitting the Duomo, Last Supper, and some shopping. Leaving that evening for Rome via train.

Rome

Day 1 - Vatican Tour, Castle Sant'Angelo
Day 2 - Day trip to Florence (wine tasting tour in Tuscany, might go to David Statue or Uffizi Gallery if time allows)
Day 3 - Colosseum
Day 4 - Explore various neighborhoods
Day 5 - Touring Centro Storico, Borghese Gallery

Evening of day 5, we will train down to Naples then transfer to Sorrento.

Sorrento

Staying 3 nights. Planning to stay mostly around Sorrento and no big plans to venture towards the Amalfi Coast. On 3rd day, flying out of Naples towards Mykonos in the afternoon.

Questions - we will be here for 2 full days, is it worth spending one or part of one in Capri? Any recommended transfers out of Naples or is train easier/cheaper? We will need to go from Naples to Sorrento, then Sorrento to Naples Airport.

Mykonos

Staying in Ornos. At this point, I think we will be worn of the tours and sightseeing so planning to just eat some good food, have plenty of drinks and enjoy the beaches. We are staying at a beach resort that has access, but I think we will at least venture to a few of the other spots via the Water Taxi. Likely end up in a club or two and just enjoy walking around the town of Mykonos.

On evening of 3rd day, we will take a flight back to Athens, stay the night at the airport and fly out early in the morning to conclude the trip!

Sounds like a well-planned itinerary, but a few more thoughts -

  1. You will need prior reservation bookings for the Milan Duomo rooftop & Last Supper.
  2. We wouldn't enjoy a day trip from Rome all the way back to Tuscany just to do a wine tour, you're passing through the region en route to Rome, is there some way to stop along the way? Maybe Florence, or Orvieto where you could perhaps arrange a day in the countryside visiting wineries?
  3. Go to Castle Sant'Angelo on another day, preferably first thing in the morning when the crowds are smaller. You will be knackered after the Vatican M.
  4. Look for some restaurants ahead of time, nothing worse than being exhausted and not having good ideas where to eat, ask front desk. I linked our Dec 2023 TR to Rome for food & other suggested walks. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/rome-was-jammed-over-ny-but-still-fun
  5. You also need entry tickets to Borghese gallery, I would get out early and do the centro storico walk first, then catch a taxi to the Borghese. You can walk downhill perhaps back to your hotel, if you want to wind down through the park & get a view.
  6. Get tickets in advance for coliseum, then walk down the Foro Romano, hang a left up the hill into Capitoline museum, turn left between museums for a spectacular Roman Forum view.
  7. Most people stay in Sorrento in order to visit the AC, why not stay in Naples? Yes, it's gritty like maybe NY, but also a completely different city with a wonderful vibe & fabulous food. Consider a foot tour! I loved Capri, lots of links above use search button for some day trip ideas. Yes, short answer is if well planned & you avoid the town of Capri, it's worthwhile. Enjoy! (PS, You could also do a wine tour from Naples, probably easier, haven't done it but I've certainly drank wine from the area.)

I agree about stopping in Florence for a day or preferably two days going south from Milan. It's too important of a travel town to miss with many must sees.

A good day trip out of Rome would be to Orvieto--70 minutes by train from Termini.

If I was going to Sorrento, it would be to see the Amalfi Coast. It's about 165 miles from Rome.

We have been to Mykonos three times--and the last time was June, 2023. It's just a small island/city and just a 1/2 day stop for me.

If I was going to one Greek Island, I'd be going to Santorini which is larger and far more scenic. Better yet, I'd skip Greece until having a full week to spend there. And Greece is easiest seen from a cruise ship.

  • Booking Milan Duomo and Last Supper through a guided tour as the tickets are already sold out for our dates.
  • We had thought about stopping through Florence on the way through, but didn't want to just do 2 days in hotels and constantly packing/unpacking, etc.
  • Noted on Castle Sant'Angelo
  • We've got tons of restaurants recs saved. If there is a nicer place that requires a reservation, we will book ahead. But normally, we just pick from the list as to what sounds good/we're in the mood at the time.
  • We've got tickets planned for the Borghese, noted about doing those 2 in reverse.
  • We had some friends who went recently to Naples/Sorrento and highly recommended the place we are staying in Sorrento. I'll look into day trip ideas for Capri.

Thank you for the feedback!!

  • I will check into Orvieto. Again, we thought about staying in Florence for a few nights but decided to stay in Rome as a home base and take the train if we wanted to go somewhere up near Tuscany.
  • I think in hind sight, I would have nixed Greece all together and spent more time in Sorrento visiting the AC. At this point, 3 months away from peak season in the area, we are kinda locked into what we have. Is what it is and going to make the most of it. This will 100% not be the last trip we take to the area so always room to improve the 2nd go around!

Thank you both for the feedback!

As people have already mentioned, get tickets in Rome now for the big attractions, as early in the day as you are comfortable being up to avoid the worst crowds. I think your overall schedule for Rome is reasonable. On your Florence day trip, I would book now the earliest train there and latest one back that fits with your travel style. You'll get cheaper tickets if you book now. You can use either the Trenitalia app or the Trainline app. Both work great, the Trainline app charges a small commission.

For Sorrento, I would highly recommend visiting Capri one day, it was the highlight of my trip there. Taking a boat ride around the island was great, as well as going up the chairlift in Anacapri.

As long as you are in Mykonos, don't discount a quick ride out to Delos. Truly fantastic place and with an early start it shouldn't take more than half a day.
