My husband and I would want to know if it is enjoyable to drive through Lombardy (Milan to Bologna) and Tuscany during the winter. We're just not sure whether its worth it or not. Thanks!
I would say not enjoyable but do-able. BUT...Italy does get snow in the winter and while the autostrada is kept pretty clean any side/town roads with snow on them could be a hassle. Aside from any possible snow the Bologna area, at least, gets very thick fog which can last through the day. Then there's a good portion of the time when it's cloudy/rainy all day.
Don't get me wrong, you may get a good stretch of days with nice weather but I wouldn't bet on it.
I'd agree with Ron - we drove from Bologna to Vicenza a couple weeks ago and the fog was so bad that it took a lot longer (you have to drop your speed considerably when fog is present or risk a ticket/fine). Overall, I would say driving northern Italy in the winter is not worth it.
