Italy in the winter

We're going to Italy Dec. 29-Jan 12... we're planning on hitting Rome, Florence & Venice for sure, but are wondering if places like Lake Como are worth the trip when it's cold out. Anyone ever been this time of year/have any tips?

I am also going to Capri, Italy Jan 4-11. I have a hotel already but I need to know if there are any restaurants open? Any shops etc. Will I even be able to get to Capri by boat. My hotel is already paid for so I need some kind of plan. HELP

Laurel,

Something you probably should have done earlier. Call the hotel and ask THEM. They will know. Also, you can google "ferry" and "Capri", find the ferry companies and check the schedule.

And consider this: the locals must somehow have a way to get back and forth even in winter. Not everyone there has a yacht. The hotels will have other guests and they need a place to eat.

And if all else fails, there was a little store about halfway up the hill from the ferry. They had excellent and reasonably priced take-out sandwiches that they make fresh for you.
