Hello hitman304996, and welcome to the forum,

There is no cost effective train pass for Italy so that's easy. Rome to Florence and then onto Siena and Pisa is easy enough by train. Fast train tickets between big cities can be purchased ahead of time at a discount but you sacrifice flexibility for savings because the cheaper the ticket the more restrictions it comes with in terms of changing, refunds etc. Local regionale trains never change price so buy those tickets - like the ones to Siena or Pisa when you need them. There is also a bus to Siena from Florence that some people prefer to take.

The Italian state agency is Trenitalia and you can check schedules on the website as well as their app.
https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
Use Italian names for cities - Roma, Firenze etc - for best results.

If you're thinking about this year you should jump on setting dates and reserving rooms ASAP for September.

Hope that helps,

I agree, no pass will make your travel more cost effective. If you have your dates set for leaving Rome and heading to Sienna, then go ahead and buy a ticket on Trenitalia.com for a fast train, buying ahead is cheaper.

Otherwise, except for a longer jump back to Rome for a flight, everything else can be done by regional trains or buses.

Couple comments:

Rome to Sienna: I prefer a fast train to Florence, and the bus to Sienna. The bus leaves from the Station just across the street from Firenza Santa Maria Novella train station (the main station in Florence) and takes you to the center of Sienna, the train station there is outside the old town, requiring a bus or cab to get where you need to be most likely.

Sienna to Florence: Bus, the way you came.

Florence to Pisa: Regional Train

Most any other short trips can be done by regional train or bus, no need to book ahead (or even possible in some cases)
