Italy in late March?

We were planning a trip to Italy in early June and now the dates are not working. I am looking for opinions about traveling the end of March, which would be spring break for a teacher in out group. We are planning on Rome, Siena (with day trips to hill towns) and possibly Venice.

We were in Siena, San Gimignano, Florence, and Rome last year in mid-March. Siena was very cool (hats and gloves some days). We had one day with showers in Florence and one day with light showers in Rome. Aside from that the weather was cooler in Siena and comfortable in Florence and Rome. Lots fewer tourists and better feeling for towns. Recommend March and we are hoping to return in March 2011.

Should be fine. A little less crowded, cooler, and potentially rainier. If around Rome, Venice is beyond a convenient day trip.

I've been to Rome in June and March, and I would choose March over June for the reasons Frank said (cooler, less crowds). I spent a week there in March 2009. The first two days it was rather warm I thought, but the rest of the week was chilly and rainy. Just a bring a jacket and you'll be fine.

We very much enjoyed our trip this year in March. The weather was beautiful - 60s, mostly sunny and no rain in Rome. We wore long sleeves and pants and did fine with light jackets in the evening. Venice was pretty overcast but still nice. The crowds seemed to be mostly high-school aged tour groups, many Spanish and German speaking, we spent almost no time waiting in line. I would definitely go back again that time of year.
