Italy in June with husband and 2 teenage daughters

I very much enjoy reading everyone's comments in this forum, so I'm inviting comments and suggestions on the following 16 night itinerary:

  1. Fly in to Venice for morning arrival (only spending 2 nights, sigh)
  2. Rent car and drive through the Dolomites (spending one night in Ortisei), through Bolzano to see the ice man
  3. Two nights on Lake Como in Bellagio
  4. Three nights in Cinque Terre (Monterosso)
  5. Driving with stops in Pisa, Volterra, San Gem (I know that's a lot) on our way to our agriturismo just west of Arezzo for 5 nights
  6. Day trips to Florence, Siena, Chianti hill towns
  7. Drop car in Orvieto, and take train to Rome for final 3 nights

Looking forward to some happy traveling!

Looks like a lovely trip. My only comment would be to forego one of the nights in CT and add to either Lake Como or Venice (I would choose Venice) The rest of the time in Tuscany you can rearrange as you will have a car and a place to stay, so if you find you are running out of time you can decide what to skip.

If you can, try to rearrange trip to leave Cinque Terre after Tuscany, before going to Rome. Return car in La Spezia before Cinque Terre where car isn't needed then go to Rome by train from Cinque Terre. This way you can save three day of rental. You can visit Orvieto as a day trip from Arezzo or as a day trip from Rome by train.

Thank you both for the great suggestions. I'll take another look at the sequence and number of days for each stop. The planning is half the fun!

Terry Kathryn and Roberto, your suggestions were very helpful. I ended up chopping a night off CT and adding a night to Rome. This will afford us the time to devote to either Ostia Antica or Pompeii, either of which will be interesting to our daughters, or just more time relaxing in Rome at the end of our trip.
