Italy in June

Hi there,

I'm planning in trip for our family of 6. All the children are 15 years old or above and are very active and interested in history.

I initially looked at this threat: (https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/italy-switzerland-trip-15-days) on this forum about Switzerland/Italy because I had a similar agenda in mind but have since looked at getting rid of the Switzerland portion as it seems like there is too much travel time and logistics to deal with.

I want to be conscious of not tiring out everyone but enjoy what Italy has to offer. Similar to the thread above, we'd like to visit Florence, Tuscany, Naples/Pompeii, Rome, but swap out the Amalfi coast for Puglia and surrounding region.

We have about 16 days of travel (not including the flight to EU from the US), so any insight and thoughts on traveling with the family would be greatly appreciated.

If it were me, I'd stick with Switzerland, and not Italy, just because of the crowds and heat issues in Italy in June.
But perhaps lodging will shape your itinerary, as since Covid, international travel has increased, and you may have problems finding family lodging in June- this is rather late to be booking accommodations.
In either case, have a great trip, and safe travels !

I think you've just about got enough time to do what you're planning. You haven't specifically mentioned art, and not going to a bunch of art museums will save considerable time.

Puglia can be very hot in June, so you'll probably want to be sure you have at least one beach break or two.

Are you prepared to rent a car for the Puglia part of your trip? You'll be able to get around a lot more efficiently in that area with your own wheels. There are a lot of nice small towns scattered all over, and it's hard to see more than two of them in a single day if you have to depend on trains and buses.

It would also be helpful to have a car for your time in Tuscany. A car in Florence, Rome, Naples and Pompeii would be a bad idea--a waste of time compared to taking trains and a pain to park.

Thanks for the insights. I was a bit concerned about the heat so was thinking of maybe swapping out Puglia for the Amalfi coast or Portofino region.

I've already looked at some hotels and not too bad so far, but will see.
