I'm planning a trip to Italy in January only I'm not sure how the weather will impact some of the places I want to visit. I would like to spend some time in the hill towns of central Italy, and I had thoughts of renting a car for while I'm there, only I'm not sure how agreeable the weather will be. I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has traveled there in January. Thanks!
My wife and I travel to Italy only in the winter. We have been all over Italy at all times from about October to March. We spent a month once in Dec and Jan in the hills above Firenze. I wouldn't go any other time. Few tourist, friendlier Italians (no touirists!), cheaper, and the weather is about like Houston or Dallas for the most part. It gets quite cold of course above Milano and in the Alto Adige (Bolzano, Cortina d'Ampezzo) but most of Italy is lovely and cool. Write anytime.

I lived for several years in Chioggia (50km south of Venice). January weather was a bit chilly but never snowed - a bit rainy at times. Tuscany is about 2 hours drive south of where I was, so the weather was a little milder in winter. But because it is higher elevation it may snow but not too likely.
