Italy in January Also

Hey All! My girlfriend and I are headed to Italy January 11-24th to visit her friends in Avieto just north of Venice. I was hoping for some recommendations of places to visit. I'll give you a rundown of what we are doing. It's our first time there so the trip has me very nervous and very excited. January 12-14 in Venice and Trieste January 15-18 in Tropolach, Austria for some skiing January 19-21 in Florence (maybe a day trip to Rome) January 22-23 in Milan for a Soccer Match Inter vs Lazio
January 24 Home to Baltimore Thanks to everyone. Cheers!

Venice is wonderful. Get over your jet lag and stay there; don't go to Trieste. There's plenty in Venice to enjoy! Make it easy on yourself as your trip is fast-paced as it is. In Venice my favorite thing to do is just walk. It's really rather small but intriguing. See San Marco, certainly, but just walk. Rick Steve's has some excellent walking self-guided walking tours. Do you have his Venice book? If you only have the 19th-21st in Florence, don't try to day trip to Rome. Both Rome and Florence deserve more attention. If you want to day trip from Florence, go to Siena or take a Tuscan wine tour. It's a great way to see the countryside. In Milan, if you want to see the Last Supper, be sure you reserve ASAP.

Nick, IMO, you have plenty of meat on this trip- no real time to add any other locations. I assume that the soccer game is a must see- if not, think about dumping Milan. Have a great trip!
