Italy in December?

Italy in December?
If you had 2 weeks in December, 18-31, would you go to Italy? What can I expect for weather and temps? Thinking Rome and ?? I am a wimp when it comes to cold weather, but we will probably be inside most of the time at museums, and churches. Of course we have to get around, train and other means of transportation. We need to go some where and I thought Italy might be the answer. What do you think?

In Italy, stick to places like Rome and other places where there are plenty of museums and churches, inside, so you can get inside out of the weather.
Other travelers here go to places farther north in Europe, where the weather is even colder than Italy, but they go for the Christmas markets, winter sports, or other reasons where winter is an advantage to them given the purpose of their trips.

Yes! Italy at Christmastime is magical. Jacket weather, not too bad, certainly not like here. Download the free App
iL Meteo
and check weather before you leave, posted for two weeks in advance.

Rome is wonderful in December, and the Christmas decorations and crèches are beautiful. I've been several times and the weather has been very similar to the San Francisco Bay area -- mild with occasional rain. In fact, each time I've returned home, it was warmer in Rome than returning to SFO.

December is winter in the northern hemisphere.
Central/southern Italy has a Mediterranean climate and has more or less the weather of Northern California, therefore winters are generally mild, but with variations depending on altitude and distance from the coast. It snows at higher elevations (both in Italy and California). Rome has almost consistently the same daily temperatures as San Jose, California (Silicon Valley). Nights are a bit cooler in San Jose than Rome as the Pacific Ocean is colder than the Mediterranean and cools temperatures more.
Northern Italy has temperatures similar to Oregon, albeit with less rain precipitation than western Oregon.
If you are from the Easter US or Midwest, you are certainly used to much colder weather. Temperatures in Italy rarely go under 0 degree centigrade (32 F) even at night, unless you are at higher elevations.

I've been to northern Italy in December and January many times and found the weather to be quite mild, from a Green Bay perspective. And the Verona Christmas market is fabulous.

I would defiitely go to Italy in the cooler weather. I've never frozen to death in Italy, but I've about dropped from the heat in August and Sept! I've also been to Italy for Easter and found it very moving! Can't imagine how beautiful it would be at Christmas. I may go to Sicily next year for New Years week! Go and enjoy a country where Christmas isn't frowned upon!

I highly recommend it, having now spent 4 Decembers here. :-)

We also love Venezia in December, but it is colder.... And time in Sorrento in December can be very nice seeing Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. We had a day --sunny and 45 degrees Fah. -- at Pompeii one year when I swear there were no more than 50 people at the site. We have also had 60-65 degree days at Christmas.

Going south, do take in Napoli at Christmastime, their world-famous Spacca Napoli and other Mercatini streets are really festive at that time of year. Napoli knows how to do Christmas.
