My husband and I are planning to spend 8 nights/9 days in Italy in September. We prefer to home-base in one hotel for 2 - 3 nights and do day trips. We're currently focusing plans on Venice then Lake Como (Bellaggio or Varenna). We'd appreciate ideas on another town to visit to complete the itinerary. We enjoy music, dining, wine, shopping, small towns, art, other. We'd be especially interested in a cruise or ferry during our trip. Thank you for any feedback.
8n, 9days? Usually time on a travel itinerary is digured as 2n=1 day. You can buy a ferry pass on Lake Como to visit many of the towns on the lake. We spent two weeks there, no car, used ferries exxlusively. You could add Lake Maggiore, Vicenza, Bassano de Grappa or Verona as a stop between Venice and Lake Como. And, of course, there is Milan where I assume you will be using the airport. Milan MXP is near Lake Maggiore. However, I would only choose two locarions with such a short amount of time.
Padua, as well as the previously-mentioned Vicenza, is a good day-trip from Venice. Those trips are done via regional trains, so you don't make need to plan ahead and pre-purchase train tickets. You can wait to see whether you feel like you'd rather spend all your time in Venice/Burano/Murano rather than side-tripping.
