My husband, daughter, and I will be traveling in and out of Milan in early May. How much time in which cities should we spend, and how would one recommend we route the trip?
Cinque terra, Florence, Rome, and possibly Venice. Also recommendations of places to stay would be great!

May? You need to get cracking! Have you bought the RS Italy book yet? It will save you tons of time and give you specific answers to your very broad questions that you can match with your interests and budget. As it stands, I think you might have some unrealistic expectations, I hate to say. Five cities in eight days? Also, you don't seem to be factoring in the travel times between the locations. At any rate, the RS books are excellent starting places. Good luck.

Three cities at best -- don't overlook Milan. Do a little triangle -- Venice, Florence, Milan. Save Rome for another time and you could save Florence for another time by adding Lake Como as a nice break between Milan and Venice. And get the guidebook.
