Joe

Does the 10 days include flights in and out- therefore only 8 days to see Italy. or 10 days excluding flights.
I'll assume 10 days
Rome 3 - train to Siena

Siena 1 - train or bus to Florence

Florence 2

Venice 2- train to Venice

Milan 2 -

Rick Steves 2009 book on Italy for these 4 stops is a must read for what to see and accommodations etc.

You'll love Italy -

I'm arriving on the 8/10 and leaving on the 21st. I have the book. I just feel overwhelmed. It's our 30th anniversary I want it to special for wife. She deserves it putting up with me.

No matter what you choose to do, your wife will be thrilled...after all, it's Italy, right?

Keep in mind that you're traveling in August, when everyone in Europe takes their vacation. So Rome (nights of 11, 12, 13) will be on the crazy side. And try to limit your number of hotels / B&Bs...it isn't very relaxing to keep packing / unpacking. Now, I'm going to assume you can change your departure airport. For a romantic getaway from Rome, I'd then take the train to Orvieto on the 14th, spend a few hours visiting this special place, then pick up a rental car while in Orvieto. I would drive into Tuscany to a central location (nights of 14, 15, 16, 17, 18) where you could visit Siena, Florence (take the train into Florence!), San G., etc. I think your wife would love Tuscany, and you can let her choose from a number of great day-trip sites (Cortona, Assisi, Montalcino, etc.)...you'll have a car to give you a lot of freedom. On the morning of the 19th, I'd drive to Venice and drop off the car there before spending the nights of the 19th and 20th. I think hitting Venice last will leave an indelible memory. Then fly out on the 21st.

If you can't change the Milan departure, I would go with something similar to Shelley's suggestion, except that I would not stay in both Siena or Florence. That would give you 3 nights in Tuscany.

In any case, don't miss Venice! And congrats...

It would help you get better responses if you add information about the kinds of things you enjoy doing, along with any "mobility issues" you might have.
