Italy hotel bookings, prices and Visa Card

I was going to book one of our hotels in Italy on the website called The hotel we are going to stay at has a website, but no prices and no way to book online -- it only has phone numbers, photos and other info about the hotel. Is it better for me to book on the venere website or should I call the hotel and try to get past the language barrier and book with the hotel directly. Do you think I will get a better rate if I call the hotel? Also, if I book on the venere website, is my Visa card charged immediately, or is it charged when I check in? I would prefer to pay Euros/cash when we are actually there, instead of using the Visa card at all. So, I am trying to figure out what the best way to book is, and also when the Visa card is charged. If you think it is better to call the hotel directly -- is there some phrase I can use to ask them if they speak English? Thanks for any advice...

At the risk of being perceived as flippant, I suggest you use the phrase "Do you speak English?" If they do, they'll understand what you're asking. If not, well, you'll have your answer.

Martha, you can always ask "Parla Inglese?" if you wish to ask in Italian. But Michael's suggestion is better if you are not sure of the pronunciation. On the phone it is probably easiest to ask in English.

Venere is a reputable booking website. You can also get a 4% discount off your total stay by using somebody's Venere discount code. You can use mine: 9FEG2VF

I have booked 2 in the last week on Venere. Both said that the credit card number was only to hold the reservation and would not be charged.
